Mailchimp is for Small Business owners, Beginners and people who are new to E-mail Marketing and won’t use e-mail marketing on an extensive level.

Both the user experience as well the pricing plan is made to serve these kinds of people.

If you are looking for some advanced e-mail marketing features, Mailchimp is not the go-to place. While you might have a small list and just occasionally need to send a newsletter, the free plan of up to 2000 subscribers might be sufficient for you.

Or you want to use some slightly more advanced features like A/B testing or marketing automation with a easy to use interface, Mailchimp is right for you.

Mailchimp is really easy to use and made for beginners. In all aspects of the software you can see that the focus is upon people who are new to E-mail Marketing or have limited time to spend on E-mail Marketing.

Great SignUp and Onboarding Process

The SignUp Process is easy and quick. Confirm the E-mail Address and you are ready to go. No need to add your CreditCard Informations or anything complicated.

When you first time use Mailchimp, the Software will ask you a few questions to setup everything so you instantly with CAN SPAM Compliance can send e-mails right away.

We really love the onboarding process. For people who are not so familiar with E-mail Marketing Services this is a great start.

The steps you are following are easy to understand and always know where in the onboarding process you are with a progress bar.

It literally only takes a few minutes and then you are ready to send the first E-mail Campaign.

Easy navigation and intuitive user experience

Mailchimp is very easy to navigate. You learn about E-mail Marketing and features of Mailchimp while you are using Mailchimp. A lot of explanations about features and links to the knowledge base and a tutorial how to use the feature is almost always in handy.

Thought sometimes it’s a bit confusing where you are in the navigation and where to find certain features or settings. Even thought Mailchimp in general is easy to use, it has a lot of features who sometimes are a bit hidden. To fully understand the full potential of Mailchimp you need to use Mailchimp a few days or weeks before you understand all details.

The Drag-and-Drop Editor to create E-mails is very intuitive and easy to use. While the lack of a visual workflow builder makes it difficult to create marketing automations.

Newsletter Editor - Setting Up an E-mail Marketing Campaign

Mailchimp has a really good real-time drag-and-drop editor. The quality of the editor is getting close to landing page drag-and-drop builders like Clickfunnels, Leadpages or ThriveThemes. Whatever you add or edit on your E-mail draft, you can instantly see in real time how this will look like on the final e-mail.

We like that the editor is easy to use and intuitive for first time users. Autosave is available in case some error is happening, nothing get lost. There is a big variety of elements. 13 different Element types with most important ones like adding Images, Video, Buttons, Social Share etc. And the elements are easy to copy/paste and very customizable.
Mailchimp also has a very good text-editor with all you ever need. Customize text-sizes, add links, font style etc. Very well done.

Even an advanced Image Editor to customize Images within Mailchimp is available. It almost replaces Adobe Photoshop. Thought for a beginner it’s a bit overwhelming with all the options possible.

There are 90+ Responsive Design and Layout Templates available to choose from when you pay for Mailchimp. It’s easy to create brand templates to use as defaults over and over again.

Thought the free plan only has a very limited amount of choices of only 2 layouts and 8 templates available. It’s good enough to send E-mails but the full power of the newsletter editor you get when you purchase at least the cheapest paid plan.

There are 2 things we don’t like too much. Sometimes the drag-and-drop editor feels a bit clumsy and not fully customizable like a landing page builder. Sometimes going back in the navigation is a bit annoying. You don’t know where you are right now.

We wish it would be easier to bulk edit E-mail newsletters. Deleting an element requires to confirm it by typing “DELETE” in a form. This cost extra time. There is no undo function and once a text or element on the E-mail newsletter is deleted there is no way to get it back.

Maybe the biggest downside of Mailchimp is that there is no visual workflow builder for marketing automation. The automated campaign builder is a little bit clumsy and you often have to go back and forth to edit settings like trigger points.

Mailchimp has some basic prebuilt marketing series like a welcome or thank you email series. You can even build a simple email course. But nothing extra ordinary. On the other site the conditional if/then automation logic is extremely flexible with more than 25 triggerpoints and you can setup almost any trigger you can imagine and customize a marketing automation the way you want.

A/B Split Testing

When it comes down to A/B Split Testing Mailchimp is pretty good for smaller e-mail lists. The Service have Subject Line, Content Variations, From recipient and send time testing available. When you use the free plan from mailchimp A/B Splittesting is not available and probably one of the most important features we are missing for the free plan.

SignUp Forms

Edit sign-up, thank-you or unsubscribe forms are somewhat difficult to find the right settings in the softwares menu.

The form-builder use the same good technology as the Newsletter builder. A good rich text editor, easy tracking and integrations and huge choice of custom fields available. Which means it’s easy to use and understand. But on the sign-up forms everything is more complicated and not so easy to use as on the newsletter drag-and drop builder.

For instance, it’s not easy to understand how to customize embedded form for beginners.
Mailchimp also offer the possibility to use list-building tools like pop-up or embedded forms. While the technology is the same as the good newsletter drag-and-drop builder, the pop-ups are not near as good as a list building plugin like ThriveLeads or OptinMonster with limited options.

It’s even possible to create landing pages and even whole websites with the mailchimp drag-and-drop builder. But for everything except for creating newsletter the technology is way behind other professional list building tools or landing page builders.

We recommend to use list building tools like ThriveLeads or OptinMonster and landing page builders like ThriveThemes, Clickfunnels or Leadpages.

Mailchimp has way more features than listed. They trying hard to become the go-to platform for everything.
You can not only create E-mail Campaings or Drip Campaigns but you can also use Mailchimp for other topics. It’s not too difficult to create your own Facebook / Google (Retargeting) Ads, a Social Media Post, a Survey and you can even send worldwide postcards within Mailchimp! But Mailchimp is not stopping here. You can create own landing pages and even websites.

Mailchimp has there own WordPress Plugin, Mobile App and many more options to really use Mailchimp as the one and only marketing platform out there.

Unfortunately most of the features are not as good as stand-alone tools like a real landing page builder, a full ads creation software or list building tools.

Support is one of the weakness with mailchimp. While the free plan is truly free, except for some technical questions to be asked – with long response rates – there is no E-mail, Live-Chat or Phone support.

The only thing you always have in handy is the knowledge base. Which is actually pretty good. But more often than not it can’t answer all questions.

First when you subscribe to a paid plan you get real support. Thought the live chat support is limited to regular business hours during the week. And E-mail support tend to take a bit until it get answered.

First when you pay the premium package, phone call is included as service. This is pretty poor service where other E-mail Marketing services offer much better customer support.

Free Plan

One of the best things about Mailchimp is the free plan for the first 2000 subscribers. It’s very limited and you can’t make good E-mail Marketing campaigns. But for beginners or people with a low list of e-mail subscribers who occacionally need to send an e-mail it’s sufficient.

Subscriber Plan

When you look at the paid plans the plans with low number of subscribers are okay comparing to other E-mail Marketing services in the industry. But once you reach your subscriber list to a few thousand subscribers it really get expensive with Mailchimp and prices of 100$ / month or more for 10.000+ subscribers is getting normal.

The pricing policy reflects the focus of the whole E-mail marketing software. It’s focused on beginners and small business owners with small list. They hope your list is growing and you stick with your list with mailchimp. But once your list of subscribers is getting bigger and bigger Mailchimp will (over)charge you.

Pay as you go

Mailchimp offers also the prepaid plan “Pay as you go” where you can buy as many E-mails as you want. And send the mails when you want.
